CHESTNUT HILL CHILDREN'S PARK
PHILADELPHIA, PA COMPLETED 1997 |

The activism of a few key individuals led to the construction of this major neighborhood playground and garden, on the grounds of the public elementary school along the primary commercial street. At the confluence of school-bound bus drop-off traffic and laterally circulating playground users, the Column Court was created to acknowledge this crossing with a memorable gathering place. The Park was built entirely through a voluntary community effort, and the Column Court represents their aspirations and diversity. The 12 column capitals, in a colorful, thematic message,
‘Welcome people from all corners of the world, (corner capitals represent compass orientation) of all races and cultures, (the multi-colored outstretched hands) to a place that enriches body, (‘eat your vegetables’ asparagus and celery) mind (music/math with hidden message, and geography) and spirit’. (stack of hearts, peace symbol) |
