SWARTHMORE, PA MASTERPLAN COMPLETED 2000

The Master Plan optimizes the use and shapes the character of McCabe Library for the next six to ten years, and addresses the vision of the library’s evolving role as a vibrant center of intellectual and social activity on the campus. The use of the new facility during this time will inform the development of a potential major addition to the library. The work is planned to allow for phased construction, according to available funding and break points in the work, allowing the library to remain fully functional during each academic year. Major features of the Master Plan are to:

1. Accommodate collection growth,

2. Include new, related centers within the library,

3. Maximize the effect of natural light, through minor exterior modifications and interior planning,

4. Improve the infrastructure for comfort, control and code compliance,

5. Address remedial building envelope issues,

6. Evaluate existing systems of lighting, furniture and technology.
